F. J. O'NEILL CHARITABLE CORP. - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland HistoryThe F. J. O'NEILL CHARITABLE CORP. was established in Cleveland in 1979 with funds donated by FRANCIS JOSEPH "STEVE" O'NEILL†. In 1990 this foundation was ranked the 6th largest independent foundation in northeast Ohio. The F. J. O'Neill Charitable Corp. has supported HIGHER EDUCATION, secondary EDUCATION, and medical research, usually in Greater Cleveland. Roman Catholic organizations (see CATHOLICS, ROMAN) such as JOHN CARROLL UNIVERSITY, BEAUMONT SCHOOL, and the STELLA MARIS DETOX CENTER have received O'Neill grants. In 1990 the foundation funded a marketing campaign to increase enrollment in parochial schools (see PAROCHIAL EDUCATION (CATHOLIC)). In 1991 the Ursuline Nuns of Cleveland and the Society of Jesus in Detroit, MI, each received grants of $1 million. That year, in the area of MEDICINE, the foundation granted $500,000 to Saint Augustine Manor and $50,000 each to the CLEVELAND CLINIC FOUNDATION and Malachi House, among others. With assets of $110,473,170 in 1992, the F. J. O'Neill Charitable Corp. disbursed over $5.8 million for 91 grants ranging between $1,000 and $1 million.
