SUTLER, ELEANORE MARGUERITE YOUNG (27 Jan. 1915-16 Dec. 1992) served the YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSN. (YWCA) (YWCA) in Cleveland, Chicago and Indianapolis. Beginning part-time at Cleveland's YWCA in 1966, she later became Metropolitan Program Director for area branches, holding that position until 1978. Sutler was born in Evanston, IL, to James Walter Young and Ethel Avendorph Young; she attended public schools there. In 1938 she received a degree in social work from Howard University. Before coming to Cleveland in the 1940s, she worked at the Phillis Wheatley Association in Chicago as well as the various YWCAs.
Sutler married Dr. MARTIN RANDOLPH DELANEY SUTLER, JR.† The couple lived in UNIVERSITY CIRCLE with children Marguerite Gray, Sheryl Darden, and Susan E. Committed to the area, they maintained that residence even after other African American professionals (see AFRICAN AMERICANS) had begun moving into nearby SUBURBS. Sutler belonged to the Presbyterian CHURCH OF THE COVENANT and taught Sunday School there. She died in Washington, DC, where she had moved in 1990, and is buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
