PAWS - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland HistoryPAWS, the PUBLIC ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY, was founded in 1976 as an alternative to animal shelters. The group rescues and doctors animals that have been abused, abandoned, or otherwise mistreated. PAWS places the animals in foster homes until they are adopted and pays for the animals' food and medicine and for the classified ads to find them permanent homes. It also works on advocacy issues and to bring animal abusers to justice. Lynda Schreibman, one of the organization's cofounders, served as director in 1992. In 1994 the group consisted of approximately a dozen volunteers and was supported by donations. Last Modified: 21 Jul 1997 02:29:11 PM
