CLEVELAND CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History

The CLEVELAND CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT was founded by Dr. ANNY KATAN†, Dr. Robert A. Furman, and Eleanor Hosley in 1960; they pioneered instruction in child analysis for non-medical degree candidates. Located at the HANNA PERKINS SCHOOL on Abington Road in UNIVERSITY CIRCLE, the Center also offered a Child Analysis Clinic for emotionally troubled CHILDREN AND YOUTH. The Center has also provided instruction for care providers and sponsored group research projects. Results have been published in areas such as childhood bereavement, racial integration at the preschool level, and toddler development. The Center evolved out of Katan's groundbreaking efforts at the HANNA PERKINS SCHOOL for preschool children, which she founded in 1951. The Cleveland Center for Research in Child Development is home to the KATAN ARCHIVES, which includes correspondence with pioneer psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, a signed picture of him, and about 160 letters from his daughter, Anna Freud, as well as signed first editions of books such as The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense by Anna Freud. In 2005 the Cleveland Center for Research in Child Development was located at 2084 Cornell Road in University Circle. At that time it also included the Psychoanalytic Child Therapy Clinic and the Training Program in Child Analysis.
