THORNTON-SILVER, EUGENIA (1916-10 March 1992) was a well-known Cleveland book reviewer and lecturer. Born in Chicago, she was raised in Kinsman, O., and attended Lake Erie and Hiram colleges. After experience as a substitute English teacher, she conducted a Cleveland radio show called "People and Places in the News" during WORLD WAR II. She began writing book reviews for a newspaper syndicate and for the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. When public television came to Cleveland, she hosted a book program entitled "Eugenia" over WVIZ. Her reviews were also a regular radio feature over WCLV-FM for several decades ending in the 1980s. She appeared as a book lecturer under the auspices of the Friends of the CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY. She was known professionally as Eugenia Thornton from her first marriage to WILLIS THORNTON†, a writer and director of the Press of Western Reserve University. Following Thornton's death she married Dr. Francis F. Silver, a former Cuyahoga County health commissioner. The owner of an estimated 10,000 books, she could read up to two of them a day. She died in her BRATENAHL home, survived by 3 stepchildren.
