SOLON HISTORICAL SOCIETY - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland HistoryThe SOLON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, founded 1 July 1968 as a nonprofit organization, is devoted to the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about SOLON and its vicinity, especially its exploration, settlement, and development. The society was created following meetings of interested citizens and a membership drive that enlisted over 1,000 persons. The Solon Historical Society Bldg., owned by the City of Solon, is on Bainbridge Rd. across from Solon City Hall. This building has housed the society's collections since 1969, when it was vacated by the Pioneer Memorial Church. The original stained-glass windows across the front are in memory of the founders of the Twp. of Solon, and the Garfield window in the small attached chapel facing west honors the 20th U.S. president, JAMES A. GARFIELD†, who lived and taught in Solon and preached in the church. The museum is open before meetings, Sunday afternoons, May through September, and on election days. The Solon Historical Society and museum are administered by a staff of volunteers; the society has an executive board of 15 members. The society holds 6 meetings each year, with free public programs, and sponsors occasional field trips. In 1995 there were over 100 family memberships and Pat Baumann served as director.
