MITCHELL, THEODORE (5 May 1835-2 March 1910) Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for service during the CIVIL WAR, was born in Tarentum, Pa. and enlisted in the 61st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in PIttsburgh 1 Aug. 1861. Private Mitchell remained with the 61st. throughout the war, participating in the final assault on Confederate troops at Petersburg, Va. 2 April 1865. At some point during the day, Mitchell captured the flag of the Confederate Tennessee Brigade and received recognition in an official reports. Promoted to corporal for his deed, Mitchell also was recommended to receive the Medal of Honor on 18 April 1865. He was mustered out of the army 28 June, 1865 and returned to Pittsburg where he worked as a plasterer. In 1883 Mitchell moved to Cleveland with his wife, Mary E. (Quinn) Mitchell, and they lived here on his army invalid pension. He died in Cleveland and was buried in WOODLAND CEMETERY.
