HAMPSON, JAMES B. - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History

HAMPSON, JAMES B. (1841-28 May 1864), a volunteer CIVIL WAR officer killed in action during the Atlanta Campaign in Georgia, was a printer by trade, who was listed as 4th corporal of the CLEVELAND GRAYS in June 1860. He enlisted in Co. E, 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for 3 months' service, 23 Apr. 1861. Hampson was promoted to 2d lieutenant on 17 June 1861 and to 1st lieutenant on 2 July 1861. He was mustered out with his company on 1 Aug. 1861. Hampson enlisted in the 124TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT as a major, dating from 1 Jan. 1863. While on staff duty with Gen. Wood, commander of the 3d Div., 4th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, at the Battle of Pickett's Mills, Ga., he was mortally wounded. He had stated many times that he would be killed in the line of duty. Hampson is buried in Marietta Natl. Cemetery. His bust is displayed in a medallion in the SOLDIERS' AND SAILORS' MONUMENT on Cleveland's PUBLIC SQUARE. Hampson Post, No. 23, GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, which met at 184 Superior, was named in his honor.
