DOWLING, JAMES (b. Ireland), Congressional Medal of Honor recipient for service during the Indian wars, was born in Ireland. He was a Cleveland resident when enlisting in the 8th U.S. Cavalry. From August to October 1868, Corporal Dowling participated in patrols and scouts operating out of Camp Whipple in the Arizona territory (west of Prescott), which skirmished with the Hualapais and Tonto Apache Indians on the Santa Maria and Verde rivers. His Medal of Honor was awarded 24 July 1869 for "bravery in scouts and actions against the Indians."
