2D OHIO VOLUNTEER CAVALRY - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History

The 2D OHIO VOLUNTEER CAVALRY, 186165, was organized at Camp Wade (see CIVIL WAR CAMPS IN CLEVELAND) during Aug.Sept. 1861. The regiment, which contained 317 Cleveland men, was mustered into federal service in the CIVIL WAR on 10 Oct. 1861. It was initially transferred to Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, where it remained until Jan. 1862. During January and February the regiment was on scout duty along the Missouri border, attached to Doubleday's Brigade, Dept. of the Missouri (Feb.June 1862). The regiment was assigned to Ft. Scott, KS (JuneAug. 1862); Solomon's Brigade, Dept. of Kansas (Aug.Oct. 1862); and the 1st Brigade, 1st Div., Army of the Frontier (Oct.Dec. 1862). Shortly before the end of the year, the 2d Cavalry was ordered back to Columbus, OH, where it remained until Mar. 1863.

The unit's subsequent assignments were: 1st Cavalry Brigade, District of Central Kentucky, Dept. of the Ohio (Mar.June 1863); 3d Brigade, 1st Div., 23d Army Corps (JuneAug. 1863); 3d Brigade, 4th Div., 23d Army Corps (Aug.Nov. 1863); and 1st Brigade, 2d Div., 23d Army Corps (Dec. 1863Feb. 1864). Following a veterans' furlough that lasted until Mar. 1864, the regiment was assigned to: 9th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac (Apr. 1864); 1st Brigade, 3d Div., Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, Middle Military Div. (May 1864May 1865); and Dept. of the Missouri (JuneOct. 1865). The 2d was involved in the pursuit of Gen. John Hunt Morgan, Burnside's East Tennessee Campaign, the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the campaigns of Cold Harbor, Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign, and Appomattox. It was mustered out and its men discharged and paid off at Camp Chase, Columbus, on 11 Sept. 1865. The 2d Cavalry lost 7 officers and 76 enlisted men to hostile causes and 5 officers and 179 men to disease.
