SUTLER, MARTIN RANDOPLH DELANEY, JR., M.D. (4 Nov. 1913-1 June 1981), surgeon, was president of FOREST CITY HOSPITAL (1956), taught at the School of Medicine of CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY (1951-81), and was surgeon consultant to the U. S. Veterans Administration. Active in civic affairs, he served as a trustee of the CLEVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY (1970-74) and the HOUGH AREA DEVELOPMENT CORP., and presided over League Park Settlement House (1970) (see SETTLEMENT HOUSES). Sutler was born in Newport, RI, to Martin R. and Mary Jeter Sutler. He graduated from Howard University (1935) and the School of Medicine of the University of Michigan (1941), where he served as a teaching fellow (1944) and a research fellow in surgery (1945-47). Opening a practice in Cleveland, Sutler maintained an office on EUCLID AVE.. He also held appointments in surgery at City Hospital (1951-73) and at SAINT VINCENT CHARITY HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CENTER (1960-63). Less than a year before Sutler's library board term expired, he resigned, along with the only other African-American trustee at the time, George Livingston. They charged racial and sexual discrimination in hiring and claimed to have been ostracized by other trustees.

Sutler married ELEANORE MARGUERITE YOUNG† they lived in UNIVERSITY CIRCLE with their children, Marguerite Gray, Sheryl Darden and Susan E. Sutler is buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
