SANFORD, JUNIUS R. - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History

SANFORD, JUNIUS R. (1835-16 May 1904), son of Maria Hayward and ALFRED S. SANFORD†, was active in the Ohio Militia before the CIVIL WAR as a 3d sergeant in the CLEVELAND GRAYS in 1856, and a lieutenant colonel in the Cleveland Battalion. He was elected lieutenant colonel, Cleveland Battalion, Ohio Militia, 15 June 1858. After the Civil War broke out, Sanford served as adjutant, 41ST OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY Regiment, beginning on 23 Aug. 1861, being promoted to 1st lieutenant on 25 Aug. He resigned 5 Jan. 1862. Apparently returning to Cleveland, he taught military tactics at Cleveland Institute (formerly CLEVELAND UNIVERSITY) on University Hts., across the street from Camp Cleveland, between 1862-65. Sanford reentered military service as captain of Co. E, 128TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT, beginning in Nov. 1863. He was later appointed acting assistant inspecting general on the staff of Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman, commander of the Northern Dept. On 25 Mar. 1865, he was promoted to major; he was mustered out on 13 July 1865. Sanford died suddenly at his Cleveland home. He had worked as a clerk during the latter part of his life. He is buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
