KOVELL, MARGARET N. (1893-3 Oct. 1992), composer and poet, founded the Lakewood Four Arts Society (1950s), an acting group. Her original works include an operetta, Tonight is the Night, presented in the Lakewood Civic Auditorium (1960s). Kovell was born in Austria-Hungary and came to Cleveland in 1905. Interested in MUSIC as a child, she studied voice before her marriage to Frank Kovell. The couple lived in LAKEWOOD and had no children. In 1958 Kovell translated the long Hungarian opera Janos Vitez into English, helped shorten it, and recruited performers. It was sung in English for the first time at the WHK studio on EUCLID AVE..
Kovell belonged to the WOMEN'S CITY CLUB, the Lakewood League of Women Voters, and the Cleveland chapter of the Composers, Authors, and Artists of America. She was also a collector of and authority on antiques. Kovell was a member of the St. Luke Catholic Church in Lakewood.
