GOLDENBOGEN, ELLEN MAY DURSCHIAG - The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History

GOLDENBOGEN, ELLEN MAY DURSCHIAG (1890-?), attorney, was elected president of the city council of LAKEWOOD (1928-29), among the first WOMEN to hold similar office elsewhere in Ohio. During her term of office, under Mayor Edward Wiegand, the suburb built a new fire station and a shelter in Lakewood Park, among other accomplishments. Goldenbogen was born in Cleveland to Christine Bozold and Ernest A. Durschiag. She attended CLEVELAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS and the Cleveland School of Education, and received a degree from the Cleveland Law School. She was first elected to the Lakewood City Council in 1926. With a LAW practice in Lakewood, Goldenbogen unsuccessfully entered the mayoral race in 1929 as Lakewood's second woman mayoral candidate (the first being BERNICE SECREST PYKE†).

In 1922 Goldenbogen married railroad attorney Norman Edward Goldenbogen; the couple lived in Lakewood. A member of the CLEVELAND BAR ASSN. (CBA), Goldenbogen was elected president of the newly-formed Lakewood Bar Association in 1928. Other club affiliations included the Republican Women of Ohio, the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS (LWV) OF CLEVELAND (second vice-president in 1927), the YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSN. (YWCA), the WOMEN'S CITY CLUB, and the Lakewood Women's Club.
