BAUDER, LEVI F. (28 Jan. 1840-1 Oct. 1913), was a Civil War soldier, civic official, and permanent secretary of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument Commission. Born in Cleveland to Levi and Eliza (Phillips) Bauder, he graduated from CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL. Bauder attended Oberlin College for one year and taught school in Pickaway County until the outbreak of the CIVIL WAR. He enlisted on 20 July 1861 in the Sprague Cadets, which became Co. B, 7TH OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY, and was promoted to 1st sergeant on 30 Sept. He served as company commander during the Chattanooga, Tenn. campaign of 1863 although he was never promoted to the rank of captain. After the war, Bauder married Elizabeth Page in 1866. They had 5 children: Arthur, Frank, Theresa, Walter, and Blanche. He practiced law and served as Cuyahoga County auditor (1877-83) and justice of the peace (1886-92). He maintained the records of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument Commission for 15 years. Bauder published a book of poems in 1880, Passing Fancies. He died in Cleveland and was buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
